Well, well, well. It seems that if you are a homosexual you will not be welcome in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo if the very reverand Cardinal has his way. Truely amazing. He calls homosexuals, IN GENERAL, degenerates. No wonder gay people worldwide are leaving the Catholic Church in droves. Personally, we will see what the government does. People have been asking us about DIH3. There will be an event, however we are not sure if we want to return to the Dominican Republic with our guests. Perhaps it would be better if we take our hundreds of thousands of dollars to another country that does not follow the lead of such a man. Perhaps it is just a press opportunity needed to build up the morale of the religious right...God knows it has worked in other places but I for one take it as a personal insult to me as an American, a tourist and a man who has tried to help the City of Santo Domingo. DAY 4 - The Red Ball

We returned to the Codia Mansion again this year for the signature event. We were very pleased at the amount of Dominican's that showed up for this party. It was advertised on television and radio and they really seemed to enjoy themselves. The production was staged by Urbane Concepts Kenny Still who staged the "Illusions of Destiny's Child" featuring some of DR's premiere drag queens, Ikenna from Berlin blew the crowd award with her vocal performances and touched people when when she gave all her tips to La Casa Rosada Orphanage. Harmonica Sunbeam co-hosted with Samatha. All of the performers were excellent and DJ Calvin Smith and DJ Relentless rocked the crowd all night long. This was a special tour with Tour Director Anthony Montgomery of Monaga. He gave inside information about Santo Domingo, real estate, gay life and more. Stops included Plaza Central - a local mall where visitored shopped and cruised with the local people.

Here we come Santo Domingo

The VIP Event Passes sold very well. Thank you for your support. As you know the Party Passes are still available for sale online for $110.00 and will be sold at the Visitor Center for a little more.

The clubs in Santo Domingo have done a great job getting ready for ya. They have been upgrading their venues and have alot of special events planned. HBO joins the Dominican Island Heat 2 Event
DIH2 is proud to announce our association with HBO
(Home Box Office) for the second year. This year DIH2 will present "Stand Up for Love" A Reception in the Garden to benefit the La Casa Rosada Orphanage and the Batey Relief Alliance.
This event will be held in a beautiful Colonial Garden & Art Gallery in the Colonial Zone with entertainment and refreshments. It will also feature information about these two fine yet struggling organizations as they try to help those with HIV/AIDS that cannot help themselves. Even if you will not be attending DIH2, please check out the organizations websites to see how you might help. We will have collection barrels at the event and baskets for direct donations. You don't want to miss this. Invitations will be available upon request at the Visitor Center. Space is Limited.

Yes it's true. Mega media giant HBO heard about our work and will be sponsoring a special reception during Dominican Island Heat 2 supporting the La Casa Rosada Orphanage & Batey Relief Alliance. They are purposely putting his show up against the second week of American Idol in hopes that it will fail. This will give them the excuse to never give another black person a music special because "it doesn't work". Let's show them that it does work, and that we support each other. This is the first time NBC has ever aired an entire young urban African American cast on a music special. We need to show support. This was not an easy sell for Jamie and he stood his ground to make it happen the way he saw fit..

The 7 Magazine: which charities are you working with?

Laurence: If you go to www.dominicanislandheat.com and click on the charities tab you will see two important organizations.

Laurence: La Casa Rosada.... there is link to the video we produced last year...everyone should watch it. La casa is an orphanage for infants to teens with HIV /AIDS in a country that has no safety net. The nuns are doing unbelievable work. People who are coming to DIH2 can bring something for the babies...the list is posted...if you are not coming, you can mail a check or send some items down with a friend

Kenny: The other is the Batey Relief Alliance and Pres. Clinton is behind this non profit. It is an organization that works with sugar cane workers who live in conditions worse than slavery. The Haitians and Dominican workers live together and spread of AIDS is exploding. Once again , they need volunteers, money and condoms. These are little things that we as black people can contribute to world health.

The 7 Magazine: but do you think the majority of black people care about health?

Laurence: We are not talking about Health...we are talking about people. You know, I have to have faith that there are those that are not as selfish as we think. At least in this country you can get treated even without insurance. In DR...no money....you die. PERIOD.

The 7 Magazine: no i understand that we are talking about people but what i'm saying is that i don't think people think about their HEALTH when they have unprotected sex. since HIV doesn't kill you instantly people feel that it's not really a big threat, these are the types of conversations that i have with my peers.

Kenny: in DR and Brasil the problem is you can't get condoms. You have to buy them.

Laurence: The world is so much bigger than NYC or Prides, etc..you know what I mean. At Urbane Concepts we are looking to continue to bring awareness to our people while having fun that is the goal.

The 7 Magazine: i understand

Kenny: The VIP passes are selling but watch what happens...once they sell out people are going to be mad that they can't get into everything. Same thing happened last year at Ebony Pyramid Cruise. People didn't buy the package but were pissed when they couldn't get into the events. They wanted to buy their way in but couldn't. For DIH2, you can pay for most of the individual events but it is based on capacity. We need people to support as soon as possible.

Kenny: have you seen the website?

The 7 Magazine: yeah i love the website it's come A LONG WAY

Kenny:.. thanks ...the video clips will be up next week as well as the entertainers

The 7 Magazine: you guys need to have some type of Spanish lessons because that is one reason some people that i know said they weren't going.

Laurence: That is unfortunate. Once again it is a big world. we have both been to Japan, Latin America and Europe. There are always people there that will help

Kenny: on the website we have a link to an online Spanish course...EVERYTHING people need to know is on the website but YOU HAVE TO READ!!!!

The 7 Magazine: DIH2 is for the mature audience in my opinion. these kids want it instant and easy you guys are seasoned and want a bit more out of life.

Laurence: No. this event is for anybody with an open mind. Last year we had some 22 year olds and some 70 year olds. We learn from each other.

The 7 Magazine: yeah it's definitely for the adventurous

Kenny: No. well let me tell you. Brazil is also going to be incredible. Millions of beautiful black men and women to get to know.

The 7 Magazine: i think you guys will have a great DIH2

Laurence: Thanks for your help.

The 7 Magazine: those who can afford to go will go

Kenny: trust me...it is affordable. The full week event passes are only $150.00 right now. They will go up soon.

The 7 Magazine: i think that's the biggest issue i have with this community there aren't many people willing to be mentors

The 7 Magazine: $150 is affordable BUT people still have to take off from work and not everyone has vacation time etc. but trust the kids find the money for what they want

Laurence: Thanks... that is one problem but I find the bigger problem is that the young heads don't often reach out or listen. There is a lot of help out here but I am surprised how many don't ask for help. Guess they want to make the same mistakes we have.

Kenny: as you know. some people in our community spend over $150 on a pair of sneaks every two weeks. Go to bars and clubs and NY and drop $200 a week

Laurence: Again remember, we don't have national magazines, news shows, queer eye for the straight guy. Everything is underground

Laurence: LP. We ask that people cross promote, trade banner, links and send out emails. That is it

Kenny: We are good. Not only are we excited about DR but also Brazil in August.

For some reason we are getting many calls asking about packages. DIH2 is not handling any transportation of hotel matters. The site hosts beautiful pictures and will have video clips next week from the first DIH event. In addition you will find information on the country, frequently asked questions, travel packages offered by our travel partner Orbitz and affiliate Nubian Knights. Santo Domingo Club Owners are working to build a better community.

Several of the club owners in the Colonial Zone sat on a panel today to discuss HIV awareness and prevention at ASA. Congratulations David, Leon, Jerry and Anthony. Read more about it on the Sports Bar Blog.
Anthony at Monaga once again is casting his wide net to get exposure for the Batey Relief Alliance. The growing power of the Monaga Blog is amazing. I published info about it a few posts back and got no response. Anthony put it out today and people are running to help. If you don't have the Monaga Blog on your must read list, you better ask somebody.
For those coming to DIH2, please take a look at the list of items needed for La Casa Rosada Orphanage. Last year one of the guests told all his family members not to buy him gifts and he would donate all the money he would spend on gifts for them to La Casa Rosada. Now that is Xmas.

Urbane Concepts -Kenny Still is still in DR finishing preparations on DIH2. He was called to the Sports Bar last night after several patrons wanted to buy DIH2 - T-shirts. Although they are not yet for sale and only available of the promotion team, Kenny sold some to the brothers from Atlanta. Thanks fellas.
We have heard that many of you are calling Orbitz and Nubian Knights regarding hotel plans. Levi and the Nubian Knights team have put together great air & hotel packages. Select a hotel that fits your budget and have the amenities you want. Remember there is no host hotel but there is a Visitor Center that is located at the Sports Bar in the Colonial Zone. The Visitor Center will be open and you can meet up with American's and Dominican's. Drinks, food, excursion and party information will be available there as well. Our friendly customer service people will be there to assist you.
The Event Passes are selling well. Remember if you want the full Event Pass, get them soon. Don't wait, limited number available. Also available are party only passes. Individual tickets will be available at event.

REGISTRATION FOR MISSION TRIPS TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WITH BRA (Batey Relief Alliance) REGISTRATION FOR MISSION TRIPS WITH TO THE DR OPENED FOR 2006.

BRA is currently receiving applications from groups wishing to travel to the Dominican Republic on medical and/or eye care mission trips in 2006. We are happy to host the mission for you. Below please read carefully BRA’s key prerequisites before it formally partners with your group on a mission trip.

§ Someone from your group must submit a formal letter to Batey Relief Alliance requesting a partnership to host a mission to the Dominican Republic with exact dates, purpose and contact person. Email letter to Ulrick Gaillard at bra@bateyrelief.org.§ The mission must be of humanitarian character, and serve the poor by delivering to the population free emergency medical/eye/dental assistance and medicines.§ Your mission group must assign a leader/liaison to carefully coordinate the mission with BRA’s mission organizer. The liaison must forward all mission-related information received from BRA to all volunteers to avoid confusion or misunderstanding – and to increase knowledge about the BRA and the mission.§ Each person traveling with BRA must read BRA’s policies and visit BRA’s website at www.bateyrelief.org for a thorough understanding about BRA’s work and the batey situation.§ Mission preparation takes about four months.§ The duration for a mission with BRA inside the Dominican Republic is usually five working days.§ Your group must provide BRA with exact dates for the mission trip.§ Unless your group specifies otherwise, BRA will suggest reasonably accessible and safe areas inside the Dominican Republic to hold the mission where the poor will benefit the most from your intervention.§ Your group must be a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 25 adult volunteers.§ Your group (liaison) must arrange all air travel reservations for the volunteers two months prior to the first day of the mission – and submit to BRA all official travel itineraries.§

Your group volunteers must pay their own air travels, ground transportation in the DR, meals and lodging. Arrangements for ground transportation, meals and lodging, however, may be done by BRA at your express request. Your group liaison must inform BRA on the type of living standard, i.e., resort/hotel all-inclusive.§ Your group must bring all medicines and supplies needed to provide emergency care to at least 1000 people during a mission. All medicines must be non-expired and non-hazardous. A complete itemized list of the supplies must be faxed to BRA at least two months prior to the first day of the mission.§ Once BRA receives from the liaison a complete list of volunteers with names, addresses phones, and emails, and final dates for the mission, BRA will submit a total budget for the entire group to your liaison for approval. The budget will include costs for ground transportation, meals and lodging for the entire group. The liaison must share the budget information with individual volunteers for their input and acceptance. Once the budget is accepted by the liaison on behalf of the group, BRA will then proceed by making all mission preparation, and submitting to the group mission and policy materials.§

Before BRA proceeds by making all mission preparation, and to help cover our administrative/logistical costs, BRA must receive from each volunteer a mission registration fee of US $100. This non-refundable fund should be made payable to Batey Relief Alliance, and mailed to P.O. Box 300565, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11230.§ After BRA receives from the group liaison one check totaling all registration fees for all volunteers, we will then proceed by making all mission preparation.§ Once BRA secures and submits to the group liaison the total costs or quotes for hotel/resort with meals and ground transportation, the group must send the total payment to BRA to pay at least one month before the volunteers arrive in the country.§ BRA will handle the following for the group 1) perform all mission logistics and handle all local bureaucracies, 2) if available, provide for translators, 3) make all ground transportation, lodging and meals arrangements, 4) secure customs clearances, 5) secure medical practice clearances, 6) transport all volunteers from and to airport, 7) transport volunteers to and from work destination, 8) secure collaboration from the Dominican’s Ministry of Health and/or State Sugar Council, 9) arrange for local press coverage of mission, etc.§ Other requirements may apply.

I have getting calls and emails about travel packages for DIH2. Although we are not handling the travel arrangements our travel partner Orbitz has been slow to respond to your request. As a result, affiliate Nubian Knights has put together a package for you to consider. December 1st is World AIDS Day so Wednesday, November 30th, Noah’s Arch will air an episode focused on HIV/AIDS. In order to help raise funds for the critical work that the Institute executes on a daily basis, we are hosting 5 parties in 5 different cities on the night of November 30th to coincide with this episode of Noah’s Arc and the launch of the Ballroom Rockstar Magazine, the first global gay urban magazine to raise funds for the Black Aids Institute. Time for a Break

It time to take a rest. Today Urbane Concepts partners decided it was time for a break from DIH2 for a few days but no rest for the troops. Partner Kenny Still is off to judge a major talent search upstate and I am going to chill with my family and friends who haven't seen me for a few weeks. We have been working non-stop to get things ready for you in March. DIH 2 is coming along wonderfully.

This week we got the new promo cards and they are hot! Look for them in the Village-NYC, The Octogon-NYC - Langston Lounge-Thurs in Brooklyn, in LA at Ivan Daniels parties, in ATL at large, at Escandalo Nights on Nov. 29th and in DR at The Sports Bar, Jay Dees, Parios, Arena and Friends Bar/Lounge/Terrace.

Completed the Club video for DIH 2 and it will be premiered in DR this week. Let us know if you like it.

* It's been a long week already and it's only Monday. Getting ready for the troops to hit the street running promoting DIH 2 in Atlanta, LA, DC, NY and the Dominican Republic. ?
We did another revision to the website. I hope you like it. Let us know.
* People have been asking about travel arrangements for DIH2. You make your own arrangements; Air and Hotel as well as ground transportation to and from the airport. If you look on the travel section it has hotels that are in the area. You want to check the distance from the Colonial Zone where most of the clubs and action is. We are still waiting for the Air and Hotel package announcements from Orbitz, however, the hotels are booking up fast so don't wait. Make a reservation and if you see something else you can often cancel without penalty.

This has been some week. We have launched the website, the blog , the html site for those of you that don't have or want flash and the DIH newsletter. Hope you all have gotten everything. Orbitz put our banner on their site but we are still waiting for them to launch the DIH2 page on the Orbitz website. They have been working to get package deals for you consider but until then, you can search on the DIH2 website, the Orbitz site by any means necessary.
We have gotten all your calls and emails about the Event Passes. We are not ignoring you but I am sure you want us to make sure that everything is in order before we sell them. Be patient, they are coming. I will tell you this, we are going to offer two types of passes; One is a full event pass and the other is a Party Pass only. We have something for everyone. Don't forget to join the E-list on the DIH2 site to be the first to get the pass information.
Remember that your travel arrangements are on you so put in fare finders and be ready to jump on airline tickets when a good fare comes around. I just heard that American had a super special this week.
We are excited to hear about all the events that are happening next weekend for Thanksgiving in DR. Look out for the promotional cards for DIH2 down there. All the clubs will have them available while supply lasts. If you do go to DR, please come back to this blog and share your stories with us.
You have to stop by the Monaga Apartments while you are there. Anthony Montgomery, has seven beautiful apartments for your next visit.
